Interesting places to visit include Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon (2 km), Fagrifoss Waterfall (20 km), Lakagígar Craters (44 km), Skaftafell National Park (78 km), Skálafellsjökull Glacier (150 km) and Eldgjá Rift Valley (67 km). There are many places of interest in the immediate neighbourhood and many remarkable geological features connected to the devastating eruptions that occurred at the end of the 18th century. Hunkubakkar is close to many natural attractions as well as being a short distance from recreational facilities for visitors.
There are many interesting walks in the area, for instance into Fjadragljúfur Canyon, along the eastern edge of the crags above Kirkjubæjarklaustur, along the old cairned tracks and many more. Just ask! The possibilities are endless. There is a swimming pool in the nearby town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur (6 km) where there is also a handicraft shop selling locally made souvenirs during the summer season. There is a golf course nearby (10 km). –
